Generative AI could achieve human-level capabilities by 2030, with economic benefits reaching up to 8 trillion USD.

In-depth Analysis of the Future Development Potential and Impact of Generative AI

McKinsey's latest report offers a very optimistic forecast for the development of generative AI. The core conclusion of the report is that AI will reach human-level capability sooner than expected, with a median prediction time of before 2030. Compared to the predictions from 2017, the new report is more positive about the prospects for AI development.

The report points out that generative AI has deeply penetrated all aspects of our lives. Unlike previous AI applications that were limited to specific fields, such as AlphaGo, the generative AI products that have emerged this year, like ChatGPT, Copilot, and Stable Diffusion, have swept into the daily lives of ordinary people. These tools allow everyone to easily engage in creation, drawing, and making presentations.

The performance of ChatGPT powered by GPT-4 has significantly improved, and the processing speed of Anthropic's Claude model has also increased notably. The report specifically focuses on the rapid development trend of AI in a short period of time. Generative AI is defined as applications built on large language models, demonstrating powerful new capabilities across multiple fields such as images, videos, audio, and code.

McKinsey's analysis shows that generative AI will have a significant impact on both the economic and social levels. The report analyzes the potential value of generative AI from two perspectives:

  1. Analysis of enterprise application scenarios. The report identifies 63 generative AI use cases, covering 16 business functions, and is expected to bring economic benefits of $2.6 trillion to $4.4 trillion annually across various industries. This represents an increase of 15% to 40% compared to the $11 trillion to $17.7 trillion predicted in 2017.

  2. Analysis of Occupational Impact. The report studied the potential impact of generative AI on approximately 850 occupations and simulated the scenario of AI performing over 2,100 job tasks in the global economy. The results show that generative AI could generate a total economic benefit of $6.1 trillion to $7.9 trillion annually.

In terms of business functions, the annual value of customer operations, marketing and sales, software engineering, and research and development accounts for approximately 75% of the total value of generative AI use cases. In comparison, the potential value in fields such as manufacturing and supply chain is relatively lower.

Generative AI can also bring value to the entire company by improving internal knowledge management systems. Its powerful natural language processing capabilities can help employees retrieve internal knowledge more conveniently, enhancing decision-making efficiency.

The impact of generative AI varies across different industries. For example, the retail industry could gain approximately $310 billion in additional value through improved marketing and customer operations, while the primary value in the high-tech industry comes from increased software development efficiency.

The report predicts that the speed at which generative AI reaches human levels will be faster than previously expected. For example, the time for natural language understanding to reach human levels has been moved up from the originally predicted 2027 to 2023. Currently, the total potential for technological automation has increased from about 50% to 60-70%.

The impact of generative AI on knowledge work is most significant, especially in activities such as decision-making and collaboration. The potential for automating professional knowledge has increased by 34 percentage points, while the potential for automating management and talent development has risen from 16% to 49%.

The report predicts that in the next decade, at least one-quarter to one-third of jobs will change. This presents new challenges for business leaders, government decision-makers, and ordinary workers. Businesses need to consider how to leverage the potential value of generative AI and manage risks; governments need to formulate corresponding policies for support; individuals need to seek a balance between the conveniences and impacts brought by new technologies.

Overall, this report provides a comprehensive analysis of the significant impact of the generative AI explosion on society, particularly in terms of the economy, and offers important insights for us to consider the opportunities and challenges brought by AI development.
